Individual Health Insurance

Health Insurance is distributed in a variety of ways. The federal and state governments distribute insurance through Medicaid and Medi-Cal. Some health insurance is sold by professional associations to their members. Most insurance, however, is distributed by employers. The private market takes a distant second place.

Individual Health Insurance derives its name because, unlike employer-sponsored group insurance that is sold to "groups of employees" and at least partially funded by employers, it is sold to individuals, one person or family at a time.

Individual Health Insurance in California differs from group insurance in numerous ways:

  • Unlike small group insurance it is underwritten, meaning that an individual must answer health questions and medical records are obtained.

  • Underwriting means that it may be declined or rated (surcharged).

  • Because it is underwritten it is usually less expensive than group insurance.

  • And because an employer is not sharing or bearing the cost, deductibles and benefits are often trimmed to keep premiums affordable.

Since underwriting can be difficult and confusing, Individual Health Insurance is best applied for through the agency system. An agent is your advocate in dealings with the insurance company and is very accessible and available for your questions. Since agents like Anderson, Robinson, Starkey cost you no additional money, we remain one of the best deals in America today.

What is co-insurance?

Co-insurance is that portion of your eligible medical claims expense that remains your responsibility. Deductibles, co-pays and percentage splits are all co-insurance. Rule of thumb: The higher your co-insurance, the lower your premium and vice-versa.
